The Power.com service lets users view activities on all of their social networks at once. It also marks up pages to include additional functionality in a way that Greasemonkey users are familiar with.

Facebook clearly doesn’t like it, even though users must explicitly sign up for the service and access it via the Power.com website. In the complaint Facebook alleges that Power.com violates its terms of use, copyright and trademarks. Specifically they object to the storage of user credentials on the Power.com servers, the scraping of “proprietary data” from Facebook (user data), and other issues.

In some ways this is similar to the actions Facebook took to block Google Friend Connect from accessing Facebook accounts last May. When third parties access Facebook, they want it done the way they want it done - via the API and Facebook Connect. Other methods, even if approved by the users themselves, are going to be aggressively countered.

These application platforms may even become a significant platform for more mainstream PC usage. Android is now being hacked to work on netbooks, and we believe Apple has plans to release a large form factor iPod Touch running their App Store platform. It’s not inconceivable that Microsoft would build this type of software distribution mechanism directly into Windows in the future.

But there’s a big gaping hole in all existing platforms. None have a direct payments platform to let applications collect micropayments from users.

Attorney Dean Steward filed a request in federal court for the phone records of a second teenage girl identified by the initials “S.D.”

His client, Lori Drew, of O’Fallon, Mo., is accused of helping to create a false-identity account on the social networking site, posing as a teenage boy and befriending her 13-year-old neighbor, Megan Meier.

Prosecutors say Megan hanged herself in 2006 after receiving messages from Drew on the fake account saying the world would be better off without her. Megan was being treated for attention deficit disorder and depression.

In his motion, Steward seeks the phone records to prove that prosecutors mistakenly linked Megan to a message that S.D. actually sent to the fake account.

Prosecutors have said the message — listed in the Drew indictment as “Overt Act 9″ — was sent by Megan because she was induced by Drew to flirt with the fictitious boy.

Steward criticized the government for poor research and said S.D.’s e-mail address was on the message.

“Doesn’t that throw doubt on the rest of the overt acts?” he said in a phone interview Tuesday. “There are 10 overt acts and maybe they are all flat wrong.”

Steward quoted the message as saying: “Heyy babe!!! Call me sometime (phone number) It’s the cell. I love you so much.”

The lawyer said S.D. was “a juvenile that was part of a group of teenagers who were texting and e-mailing each other. There were a couple of boys involved.”

He said in his court filing that he had contacted S.D.’s relatives, who confirmed her cell phone number.

Thom Mrozek, a spokesman with the U.S. attorney’s office, declined comment.

In May, a federal grand jury in Los Angeles indicted Drew on charges of conspiracy and accessing computers without authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress. She pleaded not guilty.

The case, which is being prosecuted in Los Angeles because MySpace’s servers are based in the area, is scheduled for trial Nov. 18. A motion to dismiss charges is pending.

Her label debut is due next spring. The first single, “Us Against The World,” is a “cinematic power ballad” and will be available via the social networking site on October 6.

“I’ve been out of the game for one and a half years, and I think I’m long overdue for a comeback, so I’m treating this album like it’s my last chance to make an impression. I’m competing with myself and being very detailed,” the 26-year-old Cuban-American told Billboard. “Before, I had a label telling me what direction to go in. Now, it’s my choice, so I’m being very particular about it and I’m really excited.”

Kanye West is the sole guest artist so far, but Milian, who wrote most of the album, hints at potential collaborative surprises down the line.

Milian’s stint with Def Jam did not end well. She was dropped just a month after the release of her third studio album, 2006’s “So Amazin’,” allegedly because of poor sales. The set has shifted more than 163,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

But she views the MySpace deal as a chance for a fresh start. “I have a lot of support from my peers. I have lots of people that love me and want the best for me,” she said. “Sometimes things don’t work out the right way, but I know I work my butt off on my end. As long as you know you worked hard, you feel accomplished. Thankfully, I took the time off to check out what’s going on and now I’m back, and MySpace is allowing me to do tons of different things creatively.”

Oklahoma college students who bragged on MySpace that their party business had served thousands of revelers have been hit with a state tax bill of $320,000.

The Oklahoman reported Sunday that 2007 tax documents indicate that the party business Kegheadz hosted more than 100 events over nearly five years.

But co-founder Julius Baroi estimates his business hosted just over 20 parties in 1 1/2 years, netting less than $2,000. Another co-founder, Jordan Glover, says tax officials were misled by “hype” on the business’ MySpace site that was designed to attract more partiers.

The site boasts that Kegheadz has “over 1 billion served.”

Tax Commission spokeswoman Paula Ross says she cannot comment.
